RE: NO U14 practice - Thurs Dec 27

Thank you, Liz, for this clarification and the weekly News.

Although we do not have ice time through this week and early next week,
I would like everyone to try to get over to the rink for the stick and
puck opportunities. Skating, stickhandling, and shooting all can
improve with this type of activity.

Also, if you have a golf ball or other ball at home, work on your
stickhandling for at least 15 minutes a day. Try the front dribble with
your head up; dribble on the right and left with a fake and movement of
the ball to the opposite side; toe drag from the front to the side of
your forehand foot; toe drag from the side towards your forehand foot;
and a figure 8 in front and to the sides!!! Use "soft hands" throughout
these activities (meaning hold the stick very loosely, only hardening
the grip on the stick for brief periods) and move your lower hand easily
up and down the stick as needed. Finally, keep your hands out in front
of your body, swinging freely, so you can make the necessary motions to
keep the ball under control. Don't worry about being perfect....the
more times you practice, the better you will become...honest!!! If you
have a large wad of tape on the top of your stick, you will find that
your stickhandling is easier with a small amount of tape there.

If you have a wall (or a sibling to pass with) you can pass the ball
back and forth to yourself (with your parents' permission!!!). Work on
"sweeping" (yes just like using a broom on the floor...you do have
experience with that right???) the ball to your target from a position
to your side where the ball is "cupped". This corresponds to a "loaded"
wrist position, which will improve your accuracy, reproducibility and
force of passes.

Happy new year and Holidays to you all. See you at the rink!!

Emil

NO U14 practice - Thurs Dec 27

Hotel Reservations for VT State Tournament

Hi All,

I am forwarding an email from Gary Marmer regarding hotel reservations for the VT State Tournament. He has blocked a group of rooms for us at the University Inn in Burlington. A reservation is recommended because it's President's Weekend and you can cancel up to 4pm on the date of arrival with no penalty.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Merry Christmas!

Liz

===========================================================

I have arranged hotel accomodations for the Vermont State Tournament for both the U-12 and U-14 teams.  Price is $65/night, including breakfast.  You will likely be staying for two nights, or $130 plus $13 tax.

The tournament will be held in Highgate, VT on Feb 16th and 17th.  Although Highgate is 40 minutes north of Burlington, there are very few hotels/motels available north of the city.  After many years of doing this, we've found that the University Inn in Burlington (adjacent to the University Mall) is the most convenient accomodation.

CALL BEFORE JANUARY 15, 2008 TO SECURE YOUR ROOM.  I would recommend calling now.  If you don't make the reservation by then, price and availability are not guaranteed.

Here's what you do:

1.  Call the University Inn at 802-264-4114.
2.  Say "Group Reservations"; give them Group Code:  Northshire Girls Hockey.
3.  Book for 2 nights starting Friday night, Feb 15, with check-out on Sunday Feb 17.
4.  Do this no later than Jan 15, 2008.

Information about the hotel:
  • Each room has 2 double beds.  4 can stay in one room if you don't mind being cozy.
  • There is an indoor pool.
  • There are two buildings in the complex - one is Comfort Inn, the other University Inn.  They are same ownership - they share reception, breakfast area and pool.
  • You will be able to cancel your room or a room night right up to the week of the tournament, so book both nights now.
Information about the tournament:
  • We do not yet have schedules.
  • First two games are usually on Saturday, but sometimes they'll have a Friday night game.
  • Two losses and the team is out of the tournament.  Which means it could end on Saturday.
  • If your team makes it to the finals and depending on win-loss records, it's possible that the championship game will be on Monday or Tuesday night.  Be prepared for a 3rd night at the Inn, or a drive back up.  But there's no way to know if you have to do that until Sunday.  Just be prepared for that eventuality.
Rules for Our Stay (so there are no surprises):
  • Players will have a 10 PM in-bed curfew.
  • No swimming on the day of games (only after all games for the day are through).
  • Players will observe healthy nutritional practices throughout the weekend.
  • There will be playing time repercussions for violations.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Your coach and travel agent,
Gary
